The Ghibellino, or the "Imperial faction" in the late Middle Ages, during the conflict between the Holy Roman Emperor and the Pope following the Investiture Controversy. In Italian, they were in conflict with the Guelphs (supporters of the Pope). They had influence among the wealthy citizens, such as the Visconti family of northern Italy and the feudal nobility of Germany. They arose at the end of the 12th century, and from the 14th century onwards, they simply meant one party in the struggle for power in Italian cities. → Related article House of Anjou Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
