A dynasty that is said to have reigned over Central Java in Indonesia from 750 to 832. In Sanskrit, Shaila means mountain, and Indra means king or ruler, so it is thought that the dynasty may have been related to the "mountain worship" that is widespread in Southeast Asia. An ancient Malay inscription discovered on the north coast of central Java in 1963 bears the name Serendra, an ardent Shaivist, and judging from the language used in the inscription, he is thought to have been the leader of colonists from the kingdom of Srivijaya in southern Sumatra.
