Although he had become king thanks to a bull that he had made appear from the sea by praying to Poseidon, the sea god, he did not offer the bull to the sea god as promised. So the sea god made Pasiphae fall in love with the bull, and from their union the Minotaur, a monster with the body of a man and the head of a bull, was born. …

…A human-bodied, bull-headed monster from Greek legend. When King Minos of Crete did not kill the magnificent bull (Taurus) sent to him by the sea god Poseidon for sacrifice, the angry sea god made Minos' wife Pasiphae fall in love with the bull, and from their union a child was born. The king imprisoned the bull in the labyrinth, which he had the master craftsman Daedalus build, and fed it to 14 boys and girls sent from Athens every year, but the monster was eventually defeated by the Athenian prince Theseus.
