Also known as Gaillardia. A spring-sown annual plant of the Asteraceae family native to North America. It is about 40 cm tall, and both the stems and leaves are covered with soft hairs. From summer to autumn, flower heads about 5 cm in diameter are borne on long stalks. There are 10 to 20 ray florets, which have yellow tips, red or purple bases, and dark brown central flowers. Many are double-flowered or have mixed flower colors. Some species have no ray florets and have large peripheral tubular flowers, and are called knapweed. The large-stalked giant knapweed is a perennial plant, but is treated as an autumn-sown annual plant. The ray florets are yellow with purple-red bases, and the central flower is purple-tinged. Hybrids of the two species have also been cultivated, and there are many horticultural varieties.
