The predecessor of France's AFP news agency. Its full name was Agence Havas. It is the world's oldest news agency, founded in Paris in 1835 by Charles Havas. It initially started out by translating newspapers and distributing business news. It used semaphore signals and carrier pigeons to provide breaking news, and developed into a modern news agency with the advent of the telegraph era, operating worldwide from the late 19th century to the early 20th century. It was dissolved when France surrendered to Germany in 1940, and was reorganized as AFP when France was liberated in 1944.
