A general term for crustaceans belonging to the Cephalocarida subclass. They are the most primitive of all living crustaceans, and are tiny, measuring less than 3 mm in length. In 1926, DJ Scourfield discovered a fossil crustacean measuring about 3 mm in length in the middle or lower Devonian strata of Rhynie, Aberdeenshire, eastern Scotland, that at first glance resembled a modern crustacean, the baleen shrimp (Anostraca).
