It is a direct black dye for cotton that was once used in large quantities, but production has been discontinued due to the emergence of reactive dyes and the carcinogenicity of the intermediate benzidine, making it a historically prominent dye. The raw materials are benzidine, m -phenylenediamine, H-acid, and aniline, and it can dye cellulose fibers black in one bath rather than a neutral bath. Its fastness is somewhat low, with light fastness of Class 3 and washing fastness of Class 2 (dye fastness). There is an alternative product synthesized using dianisidine (3,3'-dimethoxybenzidine), which is less carcinogenic. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
