The Temptation of the Wilderness

Japanese:
The Temptation of the Wilderness
The deeds of Jesus as told in Mark 1:12-13, Matthew 4:1-11, and Luke 4:1-13. According to these accounts, after Jesus' baptism, he was tempted by the devil in the wilderness for 40 days. Although the baptism by John the Baptist is one of the few historical facts known about Jesus, the "temptation in the wilderness" as a whole is an invention by the early Christian church. It was originally a short statement like Mark's account, but it was expanded in the course of tradition to include three temptations: (1) turning stones into bread, (2) jumping off the pinnacle of the temple to prove that he was the "son of God," and (3) worshiping the devil in exchange for earthly glory, and it is thought that it was then passed on to Matthew and Luke.
