A medical scientist. Born in Kanda, Tokyo on April 6, 1878, as the third son of Nagayo Sensai. Older brother of the writer Nagayo Yoshiro. Graduated from the Faculty of Medicine of Tokyo Imperial University in 1904 (Meiji 37). He majored in pathology under Yamagiwa Katsusaburo, and in 1907 went to Germany to study pathology under L. Aschoff at the University of Freiburg. Returning to Japan in 1909, he became an assistant professor at his alma mater the following year in 1910, and was promoted to professor the following year in 1911. He subsequently served as dean of the Faculty of Medicine and director of the Institute of Infectious Diseases, and in 1930 (Showa 5) named the pathogen of tsutsugamushi disease "Rickettsia orientalis." In 1934, he became president of Tokyo Imperial University, and worked hard for "university autonomy." He became a member of the Imperial Academy in 1936, and retired in 1941. Known as a world authority on heart and liver research, he died on August 16, 1941 and was buried in Aoyama Cemetery.

医学者。明治11年4月6日、長与専斎(せんさい)の三男として東京・神田に生まれる。作家長与善郎(よしろう)の兄。1904年(明治37)東京帝国大学医科大学を卒業。山極勝三郎(やまぎわかつさぶろう)のもとで病理学を専攻し、1907年ドイツに留学、フライブルク大学でL・アショフに従って病理学を学ぶ。1909年帰国し、翌1910年母校の助教授となり、その翌1911年教授に昇進した。以後、医学部長、伝染病研究所長を歴任、1930年(昭和5)つつが虫病の病原体を「リケッチャ・オリエンタリス」と命名した。1934年東京帝大総長に就任し、「大学の自治」のために尽力した。1936年帝国学士院会員。1941年退官。心臓および肝臓研究の世界的権威として知られる。昭和16年8月16日没。青山墓地に葬られる。
