The name appears in documents from 764 (Tenpyo Hoji 8) in the Shosoin documents, and seems to refer to a room for musicians at Buddhist ceremonies. However, in documents from the Daigo period, first seen in 904 (Engi 4), musicians from the Gakusho are shown in distinction from musicians from the Gagakuryo, so it is known that it was already a permanent facility. However, this seems to have been abolished with the death of Emperor Daigo, and was re-established in 948 (Tenryaku 2) during the reign of Emperor Murakami, with the location assigned to Keihobo in the Imperial Palace, and continued to exist until the Meiji Restoration. *Some of the terminology explanations that refer to "Rakusho Betto" are listed below.
