An old town in Sanbu District, northeastern Chiba Prefecture. It stretches from the Kujukuri Plain to the Shimousa Plateau. The central settlement has been a market town since early modern times, and is on the Sobu Main Line. The town produces rice and also engages in greenhouse gardening. There is an industrial complex, with ceramic, chemical, and secondary concrete product companies operating there. It is home to the Shibayama Burial Mounds (historic site) and the prefectural Sea Children's World. In March 2006, it merged with Hikari Town, Sosa District, to become Yokoshibahikari Town, Sanbu District. Area: 33.60 km2 . Population: 14,865 (2003). 千葉県北東部,山武(さんぶ)郡の旧町。九十九里平野から下総(しもうさ)台地に及ぶ。中心集落は近世以来の市場町で,総武本線が通じる。米を産し,施設園芸も行う。工業団地があり,窯業,化学,コンクリート2次製品の企業が進出している。芝山古墳群(史跡),県営〈海のこどもの国〉がある。2006年3月,匝瑳郡光町と合併し町制,山武郡横芝光町となる。33.60km2。1万4865人(2003)。
