In "To the Christian Nobility of the German Nation," Luther, for the first time, based on the national consciousness of Germany, enumerated the various evils that oppressed the people's lives and undermined the correct faith, such as the scurrilous financial exploitation by the power of the Roman Catholic Church, simony, and other evils, and called on the nobility (actually the German princes who were territorial rulers) who had been entrusted with governing power by God to help reform church life in general, at a time when the incompetence of the church authorities was being exposed.
