Of the vast number of manuscripts left by his beloved pupil Francesco Melzi (c. 1493-1570), many have been scattered or lost. The largest of these are the Atlantic Codex (Ambrosian Library, Milan), the Windsor Codex, a collection of precious drawings (including notes), and others such as the Anatomical Codex, the Madrid Codex, the Trivulzian Codex, and the Treatise on Painting. The breadth of the interests and depth of focus of these manuscripts, which are primarily scientific research and meditation, as well as the length of time they were produced, show that these "studies" themselves were a constant focus throughout his life.
