This is the largest of all poetry contests. It was completed between the end of 1202 (Kennin 2) and the beginning of the following year. In 1201, Emperor Gotoba ordered 100 poems (20 spring, 15 summer, 20 autumn, 15 winter, 5 celebration, 15 love, and 10 miscellaneous) to be submitted by 30 representative poets from the Shin Kokin period, and arranged in a poetry contest in pairs, one on each side. The judges were Tadayoshi (Spring 1, 2), Shunzei (Spring 3, 4), Michichika (Summer 1, 2; died during the course of the series), Yoshitsune (Summer 3, Autumn 1), Gotoba-in (Autumn 2, 3), Teika (Autumn 4, Winter 1), Suetsune (Winter 2, 3), Moromitsu (Iwai 1, Love 1), Kensho (Love 2, 3), and Jien (Miscellaneous 1, 2). As they were made up of core members of the poetry circle centered around Gotoba-in, they account for the most number of poems (90) included in the Shin Kokin Wakashu, and are noted for supporting the Shin Kokin style, which is innovative and symbolic of a fantasy world. The judgments are also diverse (Emperor Gotoba and Jien judged poems, while Ryokei judged poetry), and the unique judgments of each judge are valuable materials for learning about the consciousness of poetry criticism at the time of the Shin Kokin Senshu.
