However, an analysis of the direction of the votes suggests that it was not the ÖVP, the opposing opposition party, that eroded the SPÖ's votes, but rather that the votes of the party's left-wing supporters went to two organizations equivalent to the West German Green Party at the time, namely the Vereinigte Grünen Österreichs (VGÖ) and the Alternative Liste Österreichs (ALÖ).
