〘Noun〙① A European sailing ship that arrived from the end of the Middle Ages to the Edo period. It was originally called this to distinguish it from Chinese ships from Ming, Annam, and Siam because the hulls were painted black, and as the arrival of Western ships, including steamships, became more frequent at the end of the Edo period, it came to be commonly used as a common name for Western-style ships in general. [Nippo Jisho (1603-04)] *Storybook, Seisui Sho ( 1628 ) 1 "Nishijin is a place with many silk shops, but the black ships have never crossed there because the thread is too expensive. " ② It specifically refers to the fleet of American ships led by Perry, which arrived in 1853 and urged Japan to open its ports. ※A Short History of the Modernization of Japan (1877-82) by Ukichi Taguchi, 6.
