Gällivare - Gällivare (English spelling)

A mining town in the Norrland region of northern Sweden. Population 19,680 (2001). Together with nearby Malmberget, it has iron mines with reserves of 400 million tons, which are extracted from underground ores. It is connected by rail to Narvik, Norway's ice-free port, and Luleå, which faces the Gulf of Bothnia, and iron ore is shipped from both cities. There are also steel, machinery, and beer brewing industries. It has long been known as a church settlement, but it developed rapidly after iron ore mining began in the second half of the 19th century. It is home to Lapp Church, Lapp Folk Museum, and the Mining Museum. It serves as a base for mountaineering tourism, and buses connect to the western mountain area.

スウェーデン北部、ノールランド地方の鉱山都市。人口1万9680（2001）。近接のマルムベリエットとあわせて埋蔵量4億トンの鉄鉱山があり、地下鉱より採掘される。ノルウェーの不凍港ナルビクおよびボスニア湾に面するルーレオと鉄道で結ばれ、両市から鉄鉱石を積み出す。また、鉄鋼業、機械工業、ビール醸造業がある。古くより教会集落として知られたが、19世紀後半に鉄鉱石の発掘が開始され、急速な発展を遂げた。ラップ教会、ラップ民俗博物館、鉱山博物館がある。登山観光の基点として、西部山岳地帯にバスが連絡している。
