This is the most important coalfield near the port of Newcastle in New South Wales, Australia, where coal mining has been conducted since ancient times. It was also called the Newcastle Coalfield. The area covers an area of about 1000 km2, from Newcastle in the north to the Hawkesbury River in the south. It forms a gentle basin-shaped syncline, with the north-south axis gently descending to the south. The coal-bearing seams are intercalated in the Permian period and have 15 to 16 layers, with the lower layers generally being coking coal and the upper layers being general coal. The thickness of the coal is generally 1 to 6 m, but some are over 10 m. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
