A common name for flammable or toxic gases such as coal gas, water gas, and city gas. It is also used as a general term for gases. In relation to meteorology, it is a local name for fog, used mainly in the eastern part of Hokkaido along the Pacific coast. Mountain fog is also sometimes called gas by local residents and hikers.
