A former town in Kawachi County in southern Tochigi Prefecture. It is located on the right bank of the midstream Kinu River. In addition to rice cultivation, kanpyo and spinach are also produced. Urbanization has progressed and the population is growing rapidly. Yakushiji in the north is home to Jichi Medical University, and a large housing complex has been developed in the surrounding area. In January 2006, it merged with Ishibashi Town and Kokubunji Town in Shimotsuga County to become a city, Shimotsuke City. 31.35 km2 . Population 21,181 (2003). 栃木県南部,河内郡の旧町。鬼怒(きぬ)川中流の右岸に位置する。米作のほか,かんぴょう,ホウレンソウの生産が盛ん。都市化が進み,人口増加が著しい。北部の薬師寺には自治医科大学があり,周辺に大規模な住宅団地が造成された。2006年1月,下都賀郡石橋町,国分寺町と合併し市制,下野市となる。31.35km2。2万1181人(2003)。
