A former town in Kawachi County in southern Tochigi Prefecture. It is located on the right bank of the midstream Kinu River. In addition to rice cultivation, kanpyo and spinach are also produced. Urbanization has progressed and the population is growing rapidly. Yakushiji in the north is home to Jichi Medical University, and a large housing complex has been developed in the surrounding area. In January 2006, it merged with Ishibashi Town and Kokubunji Town in Shimotsuga County to become a city, Shimotsuke City. 31.35 km2 . Population 21,181 (2003).
