A bearing that uses magnetic force to support a load. Some use permanent magnets and some use electromagnets. In addition, there are cases where the magnetic force is used as a repulsive force and other cases where it is used as an attractive force. In the case of electromagnets that use attractive force, an electronic circuit is required to detect the position of the shaft within the bearing clearance and control the electromagnetic force so that the shaft center position does not wobble. The advantages of magnetic bearings are that they can greatly reduce friction associated with rotation even at high speeds, they can be operated in a vacuum, and they do not require a lubrication oil supply system.
