Yeh Shaojun - Yoshokin

Chinese author. His pen name was Shengtao. He was born in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province. He studied at a private school at the age of seven, where he became acquainted with Gu Jieguang and Guo Shaoyu. After graduating from Caoqiao Middle School in 1911, he became a primary and middle school teacher, worked at the Commercial Press in 1923, and at the end of 1930 at Kaiming Bookstore. He began writing while still in middle school, and in 1914 became an employee of Shincho Publishing, and in 1926 was one of the founders of the Literature Research Society. He served as acting chief editor of Monthly Novels (1927-1929) and chief editor of Women's Magazine and Middle School Student, while also devoting himself to editing textbooks and writing and editing children's stories. Before and after the Anti-Japanese War, he was a professor at Wuhan University and a director of the Literature Association, and after liberation he became vice director of the Ministry of Education, and later a member of the China Literature Federation. His most famous work is the long novel "Ni Huanzhi" (1928, translated into Japanese as "Elementary School Teacher"), which depicts the dreams and disillusionment of a young teacher against the backdrop of the May Fourth Movement. He also wrote many other works, including the children's story "Inakusajin" (1922). After liberation, five volumes of "Ye Shengtao's Collected Works" (1957) were published.

中国の作家。字(あざな)は聖陶。江蘇(こうそ)省蘇州に生まれる。7歳で私塾に学び顧頡剛(こけつごう)、郭紹虞(かくしょうぐ)らを知る。1911年草橋中学卒業後、小中学校教師となり、23年より商務印書館、30年末より開明書店に勤める。中学在学中から創作を始め、19年「新潮」社社員、21年文学研究会発起人の一人となる。『小説月報』代理主編（1927～29）、『婦女雑誌』『中学生』主編を務める一方、教科書編集、童話の創作・編集に尽力。抗日戦前後、武漢大学教授、文学協会理事、解放後は教育部副部長、のち中国文連委員。五・四運動の時代を背景に青年教師の夢と幻滅を描いた長編『倪煥之(げいかんし)』（1928。邦訳『小学教師』）が代表作。ほかに、童話『稲草人』（1922）等多数の著がある。解放後『葉聖陶文集』5巻（1957）が出版された。
