Carotenoids, the pigments that give plants their yellow, orange, and red colors, become colored, waxy substances when they exist as fatty acid esters within plants. These are called colored waxes. Representative examples include physalien, which are found in the pouch-like persistent calyx that surrounds the fruit of the Chinese lantern plant, and helenien, which are found in the yellow flowers of plants such as the trumpet lily.
