…This technique involves attaching a parchment with a sketch on it to a coarsely woven linen cloth, roughly stitching the outline to create a frame, and then following the threads to create a blanket stitch while floating it. When the parchment is cut and removed, the lace is made of threads alone. The design started out as a simple geometric border, then evolved into a wide border of arabesque, floral, and genre motifs, and further into animal, floral, and bird motifs. At that time, Italian lace was also attracting attention abroad, and was brought to England, France, Spain, Germany, and other countries by Venetian merchants as Venetian lace. In England, the term Venetian lace can be found in the inventory of Henry VIII's property. …
