Japanese: 駆込 - かりこむ

Also called "Kekinyu" or "Hoshiinyu", this refers to the act of taking refuge in a nearby house or temple when one is chased and has nowhere to run, or the practice of such an act becoming a social norm. It is widely seen in medieval and early modern Japanese society. It is well known that in the Edo period, Tokeiji Temple in Matsugaoka, Kamakura, and Mantokuji Temple in Serada, Kozuke Province, were temples for divorce, and women who took refuge in the temples were granted a divorce. In the Moriyama domain of Oshu, there was a practice where peasants who committed crimes would take refuge in their family temples and become "temple-carried" to avoid punishment from the domain.

欠入，走入とも称し，人に追われて逃げ場を失い，近辺の屋敷，寺院などに避難して保護を受ける行為，またそのような行為が社会的に定型化されたものとしての慣行をいう。日本の中世･近世社会に広く見られるものである。江戸時代，鎌倉松ヶ岡の東慶寺や上野国世良田の満徳寺が縁切寺として，寺内へ駆け込んだ女性に離婚の成立する慣行があったことはよく知られている。また奥州の守山藩では罪を犯した百姓たちが，その菩提寺などに駆け入り，〈寺抱え〉となることによって藩の処罰をうけずにすむ慣行が存在していた。
