This is an old town area in the northern part of Oshu City, in the southern part of Iwate Prefecture. It is located on the left bank of the middle reaches of the Kitakami River. It was incorporated as a town in 1889. In 1955 it merged with nine villages to form Esashi City, and in 2006 it merged with four other cities, towns, and villages to form Oshu City. It developed as a valley settlement at the mouth of the Hitokabe River, which flows from the Kitakami Highlands to the Esashi Plain. In 1088, Fujiwara Kiyohira established his residence in Toyoda, Iwayado, as the Oshiryoushi, and built a golden age there. In 1495 it became the castle town of the Esashi clan, and in 1591 it became part of the direct territory of Date Masamune, flourishing as a strategic location at the northern end of the Date domain. Located near the port of Shimokawahara on the Kitakami River, it was a trading center and made a name for itself as a trading center for Iwayado merchants. Iwayado chests of drawers made of Nambu paulownia wood are famous as a traditional industry.
