An evergreen shrub of the Rutaceae family (APG classification: Rutaceae). Native to northern India. It grows upright, about 4 meters tall, and has extremely dense branches. The leaves are small and dark green with linear wings. The flowers are white and grow at the top of the fruiting branches, mostly solitary. The fruit is about 5 cm long and 6 cm wide, weighs 200-250 grams, has a protruding stalk, and is concave at the top. It is easy to peel, and the flesh is sweet, juicy, fragrant, and flavorful. It has several seeds consisting of multiple embryos. It is common in northern India, Nepal, Southeast Asia, southern mainland China, and Taiwan, and is cultivated in warm regions of Japan. It is common in Ehime Prefecture, Kagoshima Prefecture, and Kochi Prefecture. The ones from Yakushima and Tanegashima are considered to be good. There are large-leaf and small-leaf varieties, but the Kosho Ponkan is a superior variety. The Ihara Ponkan is somewhat cold-resistant. It ripens in Taiwan from October to November, and in Kagoshima Prefecture from December to January.

ミカン科(APG分類:ミカン科)の常緑低木。インド北部原産。樹高約4メートルで、直立し、枝条は著しく密生する。葉は濃緑色で小さく、線状の翼がある。花は白色で結果枝に頂生し、多くは単生する。果実は縦径約5センチメートル、横径約6センチメートルで、果重200~250グラム、果柄部は突出し、果頂部はくぼむ。剥皮(はくひ)は容易で、果肉は甘味に富み、多汁で、香りが高く、風味がよい。多胚(はい)からなる数粒の種子がある。インド北部、ネパール、東南アジア、中国大陸南部、台湾に多く、日本では温暖な地域で栽培される。愛媛県、鹿児島県、高知県などに多い。屋久島(やくしま)、種子島(たねがしま)のものはよいとされる。大葉系、小葉系などがあるが、コウショウポンカンは優良品種である。イハラポンカンは耐寒力がやや強い。台湾では10~11月、鹿児島県では12~1月に熟す。
