jiva (English spelling)

He is widely known as the author of the Tattva Artha Adigama Sutra (Sutra for Understanding the Meaning of Truth), a compendium of Jain doctrine. The book begins by stating that "correct faith, knowledge, and action are the path to liberation," and in its 10 chapters it outlines Jainism's unique epistemology, cosmology (worldview), ontology, and practical theory for liberation, explaining how the soul (jīva) bound by karma can attain liberation (moksha). Although the content of the tradition varies slightly depending on the sect, the importance of this book lies in the fact that it is the first to systematize and organize the orthodox doctrine since the scriptures, and its authority is recognized by all Jains.
