Assay - Shikin

Japanese:
Assay - Shikin
Quantitative analysis of the metal content of minerals, alloys, etc. In the narrow sense, it is the determination of the purity of precious metals such as monetary bullion. There are dry assays, which separate gold and silver in their metallic form, and wet assays, which extract them in the form of compounds. One assay method used since ancient times is to determine the purity of gold by rubbing a sample and comparing the color of the streaks with that of a standard sample. The stones used for this purpose were called touchstones, and black, dense basalt or chert were used.
