Iioka Village

...A city located on the coast of Hiuchi Nada in the eastern part of Ehime Prefecture. In 1941, the two towns of Saijo and Himi and the three villages of Iioka, Kanbe, and Tachibana were merged to form a city. The population is 57,110 (1995). It developed as a castle town under the domains of the Hitotsuyanagi clan from 1636 (Kan'ei 13) and the Matsudaira clan from 1670 (Kanbun 10), each with 30,000 koku of land. The prefectural Saijo High School stands on the site of the former jin'ya. In the south, there are a series of high mountains, including the highest peak in western Japan, Mt. Ishizuchi (1,982m), and the Kamo River, which originates there, runs through the center of the city, while in the north, an alluvial plain stretches from east to west. ...

…愛媛県東部，燧（ひうち）灘沿岸にある市。1941年西条，氷見の2町と飯岡，神戸（かんべ），橘の3村が合体，市制。人口5万7110(1995)。1636年(寛永13)より一柳（ひとつやなぎ）氏，70年(寛文10)より松平氏各3万石の所領で，城下町として発達した。陣屋跡には県立西条高校がある。南部には西日本の最高峰石鎚山(1982m)をはじめ高峻な山々が連なり，そこを源流とする加茂川が市域の中央を貫流し，北部には沖積平野が東西に広がっている。…
