[Died] December 23, 1972. Moscow. Soviet air force officer and aircraft design engineer. After graduating from Moscow Higher Technical University, he helped establish the Central Aerodynamic Research Institute in 1918 and served as its deputy director until 1935. He was arrested in 1938 for leaking secrets to the United States and Germany, but returned to society five years later. He served as a lieutenant general in the air force during World War II. In 1953, he was elected a member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. He designed over 100 types of passenger planes and medium- and long-range bombers, including the Tu-104 twin-engine jet plane designed in 1955, which was widely used as a passenger plane. He is also known as the designer of the world's first supersonic passenger transport, the Tu-144. The Tu was named after him.
