Located in the northern part of the Dominican Republic on the Caribbean Sea, it is the second largest city in the country. It has a population of 364,447 (1993). It was named after the 30 Caballeros (knights of the Order of Santiago) who founded it in 1504. Along with the capital, Santo Domingo, it is one of the oldest cities in the West Indies. However, during the colonial period, it was damaged by an earthquake in 1562, attacked by French pirates, and destroyed by blacks who rose up for Haitian independence. It is now a commercial center and a distribution center for coffee, cocoa, and tobacco. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
