Also called motor oil. A lubricant for automobile gasoline engines, used for piston cylinder lubrication, crank pin lubrication, etc. It is required to have an appropriate viscosity for high temperatures during operation while making it easy to start in cold weather. It is also required to have good oxidation stability to save fuel and extend engine life. In addition to being classified by viscosity according to the SAE number, it is also classified according to the severity of the operating conditions into ML class (motor light), MM class (motor moderate), and MS class (motor severe).

モータ油ともいう。自動車ガソリンエンジン用の潤滑油で，ピストンのシリンダ潤滑，クランクピン潤滑などに使われる。寒冷時の始動を容易にすると同時に，運転中の高温下でも適当な粘度を有することが要求される。また，燃料を節約し，エンジンの寿命を延ばすために酸化安定度が良好であることが望まれる。 SAE番号により粘度別に分類されるほか，使用条件の過酷度に応じて ML級 (モータライト) ，MM級 (モータモデレート) ，MS級 (モータシビア) に分類される。
