A compound in which a sulfonic acid group (sulfo group) -SO ₂ -OH is substituted on the benzene ring of toluene. There are three positional isomers (above formula): o- , m- , and p- . When toluene is reacted with fuming sulfuric acid at 75°C, sulfonation occurs easily, resulting in an isomeric mixture of 19% o -isomer, 6% m -isomer, and 75% p -isomer. p -Toluenesulfonic acid usually has one or four molecules of crystal water, and the monohydrate has a melting point of 105-106°C. It is easily soluble in water, alcohol, and ether.
