Organisms must obtain the substances they need from the outside world to maintain themselves and their species. Green plants have the ability to synthesize all the organic substances they need using the energy of light, so they only need to be provided with carbon dioxide and inorganic salts containing N, K, P, etc., but many microorganisms and animals require a variety of organic compounds and inorganic salts to obtain the energy for vital activities and the materials for their body components. The type of nutrients an organism requires is determined by that organism's ability to utilize and synthesize substances.
