1847‐94 Russian electrical engineer. He invented the arc lamp, which was called the "electric candle," and was active in France. Born in Saratov Province, he studied at a military academy in St. Petersburg and served as telegraph chief on the Moscow-Kursk Railway. He resigned from his post in 1875 to devote himself to research into arc lamps, and the following year published "The Electric Candle." The "electric candle" had kaolin sandwiched between the anode and cathode, and did not require a complex regulator. Arc lamps were too bright for indoor lighting, so there was a demand for more refined electric light. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
