...Salt was produced in the low marshes along the coast, and in the early Western Han period, King Liu Bi (215-154 BC) of Wu advanced its development, building a canal to promote irrigation (the Yun-Yan Canal, the precursor to today's Tong-Yang Canal). At the same time, Hailing County was established here, and although it was abolished for a time, it continued to exist until the Yuan dynasty. When the Jin dynasty crossed into Jiangnan, development of the delta on the north bank of the Yangtze River advanced, and as people settled east of Hailing, Hailing County was established, which became Wuzhou during the Tang dynasty, and was renamed Taizhou during the Southern Tang dynasty of the Five Dynasties. ...
