A fish of the genus Lycoptera in the order Lycoptera of the order Teleostei, subdivision Arowana, class of Osteichthyes. Fossils have been found in strata from the late Jurassic to the early Cretaceous of the Mesozoic era in eastern Asia. It is the most primitive group of teleostei, and was previously placed in the order Clupeiformes and Leptolepis. It is characterized by a dorsal fin located backward and near the top of the anal fin, a parasphenoid bone with teeth and a single throat plate, and a primitive tail skeleton with the rear end of the vertebrae pointing upward. The closely related modern Arowana fish inhabits freshwaters in the warm and tropical regions around the world. The order Lycoptera and modern Hyodontiformes have a Eurolensian distribution, while other Osteoglossiform fishes have a Gondwanan distribution. About 10 species of Lycoptera have been reported from China. [Yoshitaka Yabumoto] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
