Spanish court portrait painter. Born in Benifajo, Valencia, he moved to Lisbon and studied under Mor van dashorst in Flanders (1550-54), after which he became the court painter of King Philip II of Spain. As the first portrait painter born in Spain, he painted numerous portraits of the royal family and established the foundation of this genre in the Spanish school. [Kanyoshi Keizo]

スペインの宮廷肖像画家。バレンシア県ベニファヨーに生まれ，リスボンに移住，フランドルでモル･ファン･ダスホルストに学んだ(1550‐54)後，スペイン王フェリペ2世の宮廷画家となる。スペインが生んだ最初の肖像画家で，数多くの王家肖像画を描き，スペイン派におけるこのジャンルの基礎を築いた。【神吉敬三】
