Around 1531-88 Spanish court portrait painter. Born in Benifajo, Valencia, he moved to Lisbon and studied under Mor van dashorst in Flanders (1550-54), after which he became the court painter of King Philip II of Spain. As the first portrait painter born in Spain, he painted numerous portraits of the royal family and established the foundation of this genre in the Spanish school.
