A city in the Galicia region in northwestern Spain. Population 81,536 (1979). In medieval Europe, it was one of the three major Christian pilgrimage sites, comparable to Jerusalem and Rome. There are a Romanesque cathedral, 36 monasteries and 46 churches, and a university founded in the 16th century. Santiago is the Spanish name for James the Greater, one of the twelve apostles of Christ. Compostela is generally said to be derived from the Latin campus stellae (field of stars), and some say it is derived from compositam (cemetery), but the exact reason is unknown.
