Also known as a lunar position camera. A device that simultaneously photographs the moon and stars and measures the position of the moon relative to the surrounding stars. It was invented in the 1950s by William Markowitz of the U.S. Naval Observatory. It features a parallel, flat, circular filter in the center that reduces the light of the bright moon, and rotates to compensate for the motion of the moon. It was used in countries around the world during the International Geophysical Year, but its accuracy was insufficient and it has not been used since.
