The capital of the Magdalena Department in northern Colombia. Population 309,372 (1995). Founded in 1525 by Rodrigo de Bastidas at the mouth of the Manzanares River for the conquest and development of the Colombian region, it was the first town in South America to have small-scale industries in cocoa and cotton. At the end of the 19th century, the United Fruit Company opened a banana plantation nearby, and it developed as a shipping port. In 1961, a railway line was opened between the city and Bogotá, and the city began to handle most of the goods bound for the Magdalena Valley, increasing its importance.

コロンビア北部，マグダレナ県の県都。人口30万9372(1995)。1525年，ロドリコ･デ･バスティダスによりマンサナレス河口にコロンビア地域の征服･開拓のために南米で最初に創設された町で，小規模なココア，綿花などの産業があった。19世紀末ユナイテッド･フルーツ会社が付近にバナナ農園を開設して以来，その積出港として発展した。1961年ボゴタとの間に鉄道が開通し，マグダレナ河谷地域向けの物資の大部分を取り扱うようになり，重要性を増した。
