Tashilhunpo Monastery (English name)

In China, it is called Sahilunbu or Sahilumubu. It is the head temple of the Yellow Hat sect (Gelugpa or Gelug) of Tibetan Buddhism. The temple's name comes from the mountain Tashilhunpo (Mountain of Auspiciousness) on which it was built. It is located at the foot of a mountain about 2 km southwest of Shigatse, the second largest city in Tibet and the capital of the Tsang region (Western Tibet). It is one of the four main head temples of the sect along with Gaden Monastery, Sera Monastery, and Lepung Monastery. It was built in 1447 by Dgedun Grup (1391-1474), a disciple of Tsongkhapa, who later became the first Dalai Lama. Successive Panchen Lamas served as abbots and exercised both political and religious power in the Tsang region. In the past, the temple consisted of approximately 6,000 monks, three academic halls, and six shrines, but they were destroyed during the Cultural Revolution, and only about 600 monks and a few shrines remain.
