Ryumon Sodo - Ryumon Sodo

Japanese:
Ryumon Sodo - Ryumon Sodo
A peasant uprising to demand a reduction in taxes broke out in Ryumon-go (15 villages out of 21 villages in what is now Yoshino-cho, Yoshino-gun and Ouda-cho, Uda-gun) under the fief of Nakabo (former Nara magistrate) of Yoshino-gun, Yamato Province (3,500 koku). In 1818 (Bunsei 1), a small merchant from Hoso-toge, Nishitani-mura, and his associates gathered several hundred residents (14 villages) to protest against the tax increase, stormed into the magistrate's office of Hirao-mura, killed Hamajima Seibei, and then attacked the head village headman's house. Hamajima had summoned the village headmen from each village and was in the middle of entertaining them. He apparently ordered them to persuade the villagers. The commotion ended overnight, but the Nara Magistrate's Office's Yoriki arrested over 300 villagers and others and took them to Nara. They were all initially released, but about 1,000 villagers were summoned again for questioning, and the following year over 10 ringleaders were convicted.
