An early Christian basilica in Rome, Italy. Built by Pope Sixtus III (reigned 432-440), it was the first church dedicated to the Virgin Mary. It contains magnificent mosaic decorations from the mid-5th century. The triumphal arch wall of the sanctuary depicts scenes from the Infancy of Jesus Christ, as well as Bethlehem and Jerusalem, in a stepped arrangement centered around the "Empty Throne." This decoration, unique in both iconography and scene selection, is thought to reflect the dogma of the Incarnation of Christ through the Virgin Mary, Mother of God, which was accepted at the Council of Ephesus (431).

イタリアのローマにある初期キリスト教時代のバシリカ式教会堂。教皇シクストゥス3世(在位432‐440)により建設され，聖母マリアにささげられた初めての教会堂となった。5世紀中ごろのみごとなモザイク装飾が残る。内陣の凱旋門型アーチ壁面には，〈空の御座〉を中心に，段状の構成でキリスト幼児伝の諸場面とベツレヘム，エルサレムが表される。図像的にも場面選択のうえでも独特のこの装飾は，神の母(テオトコス)処女マリアによるキリストの受肉という，エフェソス公会議(431)で認められた教義を反映するものと考えられている。
