1594‐1661 French poet. Born in Normandy as the son of a successful sailor. At a young age, he joined the great voyages, traveling as far as America and India. In 1618, he went to Paris, where he was protected by several great nobles, became acquainted with poets such as Billot, and devoted himself to writing poetry. From around 1627, he accompanied various missions to various European countries, but after 1651 he settled in Paris. His poetry is extremely wide-ranging, from the fantastic poem "Solitude," which sings of a remote and desolate landscape, to skillful mythological poems in the style of Marino, to commission poems praising wine, cheese, and melons, satirical poems, and the epic poem "Moses Saved," but all of them are characterized by a sharp sense of language and rich imagery.
