French poet. Born in Normandy as the son of a successful sailor. At a young age, he joined the great voyages, traveling as far as America and India. In 1618, he went to Paris, where he was protected by several great nobles, became acquainted with poets such as Billot, and devoted himself to writing poetry. From around 1627, he accompanied various missions to various European countries, but after 1651 he settled in Paris. His poetry is extremely wide-ranging, from the fantastic poem "Solitude," which sings of a remote and desolate landscape, to skillful mythological poems in the style of Marino, to commission poems praising wine, cheese, and melons, satirical poems, and the epic poem "Moses Saved," but all of them are characterized by a sharp sense of language and rich imagery.

フランスの詩人。成功した船乗りの子としてノルマンディー地方に生まれる。若くして大航海に加わり，アメリカ，インドにまで旅行した。1618年パリに赴き，何人もの大貴族の庇護を受け，ビヨーらの詩人と交わり，自らも詩作にいそしんだ。27年ころからさまざまの使節団に随行してヨーロッパ諸国を歴訪したが，51年以降はパリに落ち着いた。彼の詩作は，人里離れた荒涼たる風景を歌った幻想的な詩編《孤独》から，マリーノ風の技巧的な神話詩，酒やチーズさらにメロンをたたえた嘱目の詩，風刺詩，叙事詩《救われたモーゼ》ときわめて幅が広いが，いずれも鋭い言語感覚と豊かなイメージを特徴としている。
