Agatha Christie

Agatha Christie

A leading female mystery writer in the UK. Born on September 15th in Torquay, Devonshire. She had almost no formal schooling. After her first marriage in 1914, she worked as a volunteer nurse at a hospital in Torquay during the First World War, but began writing her first novel, The Mysterious Affair at Styles, which she completed in 1916 and published in 1920. This work marks the debut of Hercule Poirot, the familiar egg-headed Belgian detective. After publishing several novels, she established herself as a mystery writer with The Murder of Roger Ackroyd (1926), which was praised for its original technique and unexpected culprit. However, shortly after this, she caused a famous mysterious disappearance case, divorced her husband the year after, and remarried the young archaeologist M. Mallowan in 1930, causing a stir in the media.

It was from this time on that Christie literally began to achieve success worthy of the titles "Duchess of Death" and "Queen of Crime." With her ideas and writing ability remaining undiminished even in her later years, she continued to publish 66 full-length works, as well as short stories and dramas, including "Murder on the Orient Express" (1934), "Death on the Nile" (1937), "And Then There Were None" (1939), "Demon at Noon" (1941), "Towards Zero Hour" (1944), "After the Funeral" (1953), "The Mirror Cracked Horizontally" (1962), and "The Moving Finger" (1968). Her play "The Mousetrap" (premiered in 1952) achieved an astonishingly long run.

The features of her works are that they skillfully introduce natural tricks and conflicts arising from human character into the plot's brilliant ideas, and Miss Marple, another great detective alongside Poirot, is good at solving mysteries by focusing on human character. In addition to detective novels, she also wrote romantic novels under the name Mary Westmacot, and also published "Autobiography" (1977). She died on January 12, 1976.
