[Died] August 7, 461. Western Roman Emperor during the last period of the Tortonian Empire (reigned 457-461). He served in the military under F. Aetius. Later, he helped Emperor Avitus abdicate, and became the most powerful man in the country. He was succeeded by his old friend F. Ricimer. He conducted honest government, attempted administrative reform, and fought against the Vandals in the Bay of Alicante in Spain in May 460 to recapture Africa, but was defeated and made a humiliating peace with Gaiseric. As a result, he was forced to abdicate and executed by Ricimer. G. Sidonius wrote a hymn to him.

帝政末期の西ローマ皇帝 (在位 457～461) 。 F.アエチウスのもとで軍務につく。のちアウィツス帝退位に協力，最高の実力者となり，古くからの友人 F.リキメルに推戴された。良心的政治を行い，行政改革を試み，アフリカを奪還するために，スペインのアリカンテ湾で，460年5月，バンダル族と戦ったが敗れ，ガイゼリックと屈辱的講和を結んだ。このためリキメルに退位させられ，処刑された。 G.シドニウスは彼への頌詩を著わしている。
