The world's second largest oil company after Exxon. Shell is abbreviated as Shell. Like Exxon, Shell is a vertically integrated group that handles everything from crude oil extraction to refining and sales, and also operates in natural gas, chemicals, and nuclear power. Shell is a typical multinational corporation with operations in over 100 countries around the world, excluding communist countries. Shell is made up of two parent companies (holding companies): Royal Dutch Petroleum Co. (NVKoninklijke Nederlandsche Petroleum Maatschappij) in the Netherlands and Shell Transport & Trading Co. in the UK.

エクソンに次ぐ世界第2位の規模をもつ石油会社。シェルと略称。エクソンと同じように原油採掘から精製，販売まで垂直に統合されたグループで，ほかに天然ガス，化学，原子力事業も行っている。共産圏を除く世界100ヵ国以上に進出している典型的な多国籍企業である。　シェルはオランダのロイヤル･ダッチ･ペトロリアム社Royal Dutch Petroleum Co.(N.V.Koninklijke Nederlandsche Petroleum Maatschappij)とイギリスのシェル･トランスポート･アンド･トレーディング社Shell Transport & Trading Co.という二つの親会社(持株会社)から成る。
