Japanese: サワガニ(沢蟹) - サワガニ（英語表記）Geothelphusa dehaani

A crab of the family Potamidae that lives in the clear waters of mountain streams, endemic to Japan (illustration). It is the only purely freshwater crab that inhabits Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu, with its southern limit being Yakushima. In recent years, it has become popular as a pet, and is also eaten deep-fried or boiled in a sweet and spicy sauce. The color is not necessarily consistent depending on the habitat, but there are three basic types: dark purple-brown, reddish brown, and light blue. The general distribution of these color types often differs depending on the region, but they are taxonomically treated as the same species.

谷川の清流にすむ甲殻綱サワガニ科のカニで，日本固有種（イラスト）。本州，四国，九州に生息する唯一の純淡水産のカニで，南限は屋久島である。近年ではペットとしても人気があるほか，空揚げにしたり甘辛く煮て食用とされる。生息場所によって色彩は必ずしも一定していないが，濃紫褐色，茶褐色，淡青色が基本3型とされる。これらの色彩型の一般的な分布には地域性が認められることが多いが，分類学的には同種として扱われている。
